BlackBerry OS 6.0 for Bold 9700 Users

Some of you might have heard and read about the new BlackBerry OS 6 and the features it offers. You might have been wondering when the new OS will be released for Bold 9700. Recently CrackBerry.com announced that the latest leaked OS version 6.0.0.358 had been released, which should be a better one as compare to the version 6.0.0.344 released earlier this month. Few issues found in earlier release have been fixed, but few are still unsolved:
  • "Side-swiping" tray on home screen (moving from one tray to another) is smoother.
  • RSS feeds in Social Feeds loads faster, but the icon seems to have problems.
  • Booting time is much faster. It takes about less than a minute to boot up.
  • Copy and paste issue when editing contacts is resolved.
  • No more issue in sending text messages after disabling Wi-Fi.
  • Browser loads faster and smoother.
  • T-mobile theme is still not working.
  • Scanning QR code to add contacts in BlackBerry Messenger is still not working.
  • BlackBerry Maps does not show any maps.
  • Cursor issue in BlackBerry Messenger and text messages are still not resolved. Here is the trick to display the cursor: scroll to a particular conversation or message and hit the SHIFT key.
  • Memory leak is still an issue. After completing OS and third-party applications installation, my device storage was left with around 70MB. Within 12 hours, the storage dropped to 21MB! After reboot the device, everything was back to 60-70MB. Not really sure which applications caused the leak.
  • There is a case where the battery suddenly dropped from 40% to 8%.

If you would like to experience the features that OS 6 offers despite of the issues mentioned above and you are comfortable enough, you can download the leaked OS from here. However, please keep in mind that this leaked OS is NOT an official release and is not supported by RIM or any carriers. Install or update it at your own risk! If you personally ask me: "Is it worth to update?" My answer would be "Yes" :)

I have summarized the installation procedure (Windows version) which you can follow so that you will not encounter any problems when installing the new leaked OS:
  • There have been many issues created by restoring third party applications and backup files when moving from an older OS to OS 6. You should avoid this by telling the loader not to restore any backup. Perform the backup manually beforehand using BlackBerry Desktop Software and ensure that you perform a "full" backup. This should include all service books. Upon successfully installing OS 6, you can manually restore the backup and you should only restore data like contacts, calendar, memos, tasks, messages, etc.

  • Close the BlackBerry Desktop Software, download, and install the leaked OS to your computer/notebook.

  • Upon installation, go to "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader" directory and remove the "Vendor.xml" if any.

  • If you bought your Bold 9700 from T-Mobile like I did, you need to remove the T-Mobile Theme before you install the OS. This prevents you from getting a totally white screen and unable to use it after completing the OS installation. Go to "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\9700M_v6.0.0.358_P6.6.0.63\Java" directory and remove:

    net_rim_theme_tmobile_BlackBerry6_480x360_b.cod
    net_rim_theme_tmobileeu_BlackBerry6_480x360_b.cod

  • Since the new OS requires lots of memory space, there are few unnecessary files (sample backgrounds, music, and video) which you can remove below files to free up some space so that you can install more third-party applications later on:

    net_rim_bb_medialoader_music_480x360_03_c.cod
    net_rim_bb_medialoader_video_480x360_03_c.cod
    net_rim_bb_mediaOTA_backgrounds_480x360_03_c.cod

    Apart from that, you also need to modify the BlackBerry.alx in "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\9700M_v6.0.0.358_P6.6.0.63" directory. Open using any text editor and search for below section:

    <fileset model="Onyx" series="Onyx">
       <files>
           net_rim_bb_mediaOTA_480x360_03_c.cod
           net_rim_bb_mediaOTA_backgrounds_480x360_03_c.cod
           net_rim_bb_mediaOTA_ringtones_480x360_03_c.cod
           net_rim_bb_medialoader_music_480x360_03_c.cod
           net_rim_bb_medialoader_video_480x360_03_c.cod
       </files>
    </fileset>

    Remove net_rim_bb_mediaOTA_backgrounds_480x360_03_c.codnet_rim_bb_medialoader_video_480x360_03_c.cod, and net_rim_bb_medialoader_music_480x360_03_c.cod from that section.

  • Some of you might prefer the ringtones come together with old OS 5. You can include them in the installation process. What you need to do is to download the ringtones from here, copy and paste the net_rim_bb_medialoader_ringtones_480x360_03_b.cod into "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\9700M_v6.0.0.358_P6.6.0.63\Java" directory. Besides that, you also need to include net_rim_bb_medialoader_ringtones_480x360_03_b.cod into BlackBerry.alx as mentioned in the previous point.

  • The new leaked OS does not support East Asian Languages. If you would like to install it, you can download the languages module from here and here. You need to copy over all .cod files to "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\9700M_v6.0.0.358_P6.6.0.63\Java" and .alx into "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\9700M_v6.0.0.358_P6.6.0.63" folder.

  • Okay, we are done with the pre-configuration and it's time for the OS installation. Execute the "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader\Loader.exe" to run the Application Loader Wizard. Tick the applications you would like to install and remember not to select the auto-backup option. It takes a while to complete the update. Done!
